Skid steer loaders bring versatility to several applications, from construction to landscaping, to agriculture. They come in different sizes and are always extremely maneuverable, able to operate in tight areas where larger machines would have a hard time. Add to that a wide range of implements, and you have a loader that gets more work done in less time.

Classification

There are three general classes of skid steer loaders determined by their operating capacities: small frame (1,750 lbs., under 50 hp), medium frame (1,750-2,200 lbs., 50-70 hp), and large frame (over 2,200 lbs., over 70 hp). The bigger your project, the larger a loader you’ll need. A smaller operating space means smaller skid steer loaders are going to be easier to maneuver, while unfinished or uneven work areas might require a larger and more powerful machine. Always match the size and capacity of your loader with the implements you intend to use.

Small Skid Steer Loaders

Small-frame skid steers are great for many different jobs, including minor demolition, material management, building and site development, trenching, leveling, post-hole digging, and general property management. As the smallest class, they’re also the most maneuverable, meaning they can operate in the most cramped work environments. The lightweight construction also makes them ideal for working on established turf, though they have the smallest selection of implements.

Medium-Sized Models

These loaders perform well on construction and material management sites and are perfect for debris removal, moving around a lot of material, grading, and leveling, as well as preparing sites for more substantial work. They’re still plenty maneuverable and have access to a wider range of implements than their smaller cousins.

Large Skid Steers

The largest models are very similar to smaller versions, but they bring the peak of power to bear, allowing for a full range of implements. A larger, heavier loader means heavier loads, so these skid steers are best applied at serious demolition, construction, and excavation projects.

From material moving to debris removal, and the plethora of available attachments, you’ll have a hard time finding a job these versatile machines can’t do.
